Um causo

Essa semana, lembrei com bom humor da vez que demorei muito (MUITO!) para entender de onde uma pessoa era.

Não é novidade que falar inglês com confiança requer prática, e entender o inglês também. Quando morei na Holanda, eu tentava praticar o tempo todo. Havia duas moças intercambistas na cidade, mas elas eram menos confiantes no segundo idioma (ou talvez mais tímidas, ou apenas culturalmente diferentes).

Demorei semanas para entender de onde elas eram. Já estava passando vergonha, era a terceira vez que perguntava o país de origem. A mais falante dizia que era de Billy Beans (não sou boa em geografia e pensava “que país é Bilibin? Billy Bin?”).

Lá, o transporte principal é a bicicleta, e eles sempre diziam “op de fiets” (“on the bike”). Só quando ela disse “op de piets” a ficha caiu. Ela trocava o F pelo B. Era das FILIPINAS!

Sempre lembro desse causo quando me contam como é difícil conversar com quem também fala inglês como segunda língua. Às vezes é mesmo, e eles também devem sofrer com nossos erros e escorregadas – bom motivo para seguir melhorando, né?

A lesson

Sometimes, small pronunciation differences can lead to big misunderstandings. In the story, "fiets" and "piets" caused confusion because of the swapped sounds. Go ahead and practice recognizing words that might be tricky if pronounced differently.

Below are some pairs of words. Your task is to think about how changing just one sound could lead to confusion. Write a sentence using each word pair, and see if you can imagine how these words might cause a funny misunderstanding if mixed up.

Example:

• bike and pike

  • Sentence: "I saw a bike parked outside, but my friend thought I meant a pike in the lake!"

By the way, this is a pike:

In Portuguese, a pike (the fish) is called Lúcio! It's a type of freshwater fish known for its long body and sharp teeth.

Now you try with these words:

2. ship and sheep

3. coat and goat

4. bed and bad

5. fan and van

Further reflection: Have you ever misunderstood a word because of pronunciation? What happened? …or has anyone ever misunderstood you because of a mispronounced word? Did you realize what it was?
