A ediรงรฃo anterior: English from Brasil # 26
Hello, hello!
Billy Bin?โ).
Lรก, o transporte principal รฉ a bicicleta, e eles sempre diziam โop de fietsโ (โon the bikeโ). Sรณ quando ela disse โop de pietsโ a ficha caiu. Ela trocava o F pelo B. Era das FILIPINAS!
Sempre lembro desse causo quando me contam como รฉ difรญcil conversar com quem tambรฉm fala inglรชs como segunda lรญngua. รs vezes รฉ mesmo, e eles tambรฉm devem sofrer com nossos erros e escorregadas โ bom motivo para seguir melhorando, nรฉ?

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." โ George Bernard Shaw
A lesson
Sometimes, small pronunciation differences can lead to big misunderstandings. In the story, "fiets" and "piets" caused confusion because of the swapped sounds. Go ahead and practice recognizing words that might be tricky if pronounced differently.
Below are some pairs of words. Your task is to think about how changing just one sound could lead to confusion. Write a sentence using each word pair, and see if you can imagine how these words might cause a funny misunderstanding if mixed up.
Example:
bike and pike
Sentence: "I saw a bike parked outside, but my friend thought I meant a pike in the lake!"
By the way, this is a pike:
In Portuguese, a pike (the fish) is called Lรบcio! It's a type of freshwater fish known for its long body and sharp teeth.
Now you try with these words:
pen and pan
ship and sheep
coat and goat
bed and bad
fan and van
Further reflection: Have you ever misunderstood a word because of pronunciation? What happened? โฆor has anyone ever misunderstood you because of a mispronounced word? Did you realize what it was?
A question
What are your top 3 most difficult words to pronounce in English?
(Aproveita a pergunta para praticar o seu inglรชs nos comentรกrios!)

Achei demais o paรญs Bilibin hahaha!
ร realmente difรญcil essas palavras com sons similares. Geralmente tento me guiar pelo contexto da frase (por exemplo, deve ser meio difรญcil fritar um ovo numa caneta ๐ )
